Freiburg is a green city

Not only is it a focal point for renewable energies, environmental policies and sustainability – especially in the Vauban district – but also the city is situated at the western edge of the Black Forest. A river, called Dreisam, flows through large portions of the city.

Freiburg is a university town

The Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg has a long lasting tradition as a comprehensive university and a strong commitment towards future-oriented research.

In 2006/2007 the university received funding for its future concept "Windows for Research" as part of the German Universities Excellence Initiative. From 2007 until 2012 the university was therefore acknowledged as a excellence university. The Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies which was established 2008 as part of the Excellence Iniative promotes high-level research and aims to develop interdisciplinary research fields. In 2009 the university was distinguished by the Stifterverband der deutschen Wissenschaft for its plans for innovative teaching concepts.

The Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg hosts numerous Collaborative Research Centres. The university as well as several other educational and research institutes render the city a center of academia.

Venue

The relaunch conference will take place in the Kollegiengebäude I, which is part of the main campus of the University in the old city. The picturesque Jugendstil building is made of red sandstone and was built from 1907 to 1911. Visitors entering the south entrance are greeted by two sculptures of Homer and Aristotle.
